If you haven't heard about the Jena 6, I'm here to give you access to information on this outrageous case and what you can do to support sorely-needed justice.

Six African-American high school students in Jena, Louisana are in the midst of trials and sentencing for an attack that the white students at Jena High School provoked. In December 2006, a white student was beaten by the Jena 6 after several months of rising racial tensions. He suffered from a concussion but was only hospitalized for a day and could "attend a social function that evening." Except for 16-year old Mychal Bell, the Jena 6 are charged with attempted second degree murder. Bell was tried as an adult and Thursday is the day he was supposed to receive his charges; however, the case was dismissed and will be retried since he should have been tried as a juvenile. The rest have not received trials and still face 22 to 100 years in prison. Many of the students were stuck in jail due to bail has high as $130,000, and one remained in jail up until last month (it had been 8 months) until his family raised enough money to get him out. Although the Jena 6 committed a crime, they are being heavily discriminated against by the town of Jena, Jena's school board, and the law.

This Thursday, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is hosting a march in Jena, Louisana. This is the day that Mychal Bell was supposed to receive his original sentence and is now a day for protest against the unfair treatment of these teenagers by Louisana's court system. I'm assuming that no one in our district will be able to attend this march, but WE CAN STILL SUPPORT THEM. On Thursday, wear all black to show your support for the Jena 6 and tell administrators, teachers, and students why you are doing so. This case has not been widely publicized around the country and it demands immediate attention. I implore you to read more on this extremely interesting and real case that these teenagers as well as people of color in this country are facing right now.
